I'm fundraising for...

Make-A-Wish® UK grant life-changing wishes for thousands of critically ill children across the UK. Sadly, the number of wish enquiries from seriously ill children with less than a year to live is rising fast. They need help to meet this urgent demand now - before it’s too late. For families with critically ill children, every day counts. Your support has the power to make a wish come true for a critically ill child, allowing families to create lasting memories that they will treasure forever – no matter what the future holds.

The Challenge: The Great North Run (aka 13.1 Miles from Newcastle to South Shields)
The Runner: Senior Brady
The Date: September 13th (A day that will live in infamy... and joint pain).

THE MYTH: Legend has it that back at school, Senior Brady was a "reasonably good long-distance runner." Note the carefully chosen words. It means he didn’t finish last in the mandatory cross-country run, and on at least two occasions, he didn’t hide in the bushes until the pack came back around. This "elite" athletic background consists mainly of owning a pair of plimsolls and once running so fast he gave himself a stitch.

THE REALITY: His adult running career is a somewhat shorter tale. His peak achievement? A 10k. That sounds impressive until you hear the testimony from witnesses. When he "did" the 10k, he did not run the whole time. Strategic interludes included:

  • An accidental stop to tie a shoe that wasn't loose.

  • A three-minute pause to "check the map" on a clearly marked straight road.

  • A period of advanced aerobic power-walking that was slower than the casual joggers.

THE PROBLEM: A half-marathon is 13.1 miles (or 21k, if you want him to vomit instantly). This is precisely double the distance he has never successfully run without stopping.

WHY YOU SHOULD SPONSOR HIM: Because this is not a run. It is a dynamic endurance experiment. You aren't paying to see athletic prowess. You are paying to see:

  1. What color his face turns by mile 3 (predictions range from "Angry Lobster" to "Unripe Grape").

  2. If he tries to convince a St. John Ambulance volunteer that he is a professional "Power Walker."

  3. The sheer, unadulterated regret at the 10-mile marker, knowing there are still 3.1 miles to go, and it is entirely on a steep hill overlooking the sea.

Every penny you donate goes to Make a Wish, but every mile he completes is a personal miracle. Please sponsor this incredibly brave/foolhardy soul before he changes his mind and remembers that walking is much nicer.

Also, DPD will match every pound raised for this wonderful cause so do give generiously if you're able to so that special wish can become a reality.

Thank you!
